The eagerly anticipated fourth and final installment of Lochlea distillery's annual releases draws inspiration from the changing seasons at the farm. Ploughing Edition (First Crop), representing winter, marks the time when the soil is prepared for the next barley sowing. Notably, it is the distillery's first single malt to feature a smoky profile. This whisky has been matured in a blend of ex-Islay whisky barrels and peated quarter casks, imparting an additional cosy layer of smoke to its core fruit and cereal character. Upon nosing, one detects earthy peat, warm apple pie, dark caramelised sugar, and cinnamon spice. On the palate, the balanced bonfire smoke intertwines seamlessly with spiced apple compote, toasted cobnuts, and buttery shortbread. The finish reveals damp embers complemented by warming allspice.
