Whisky

Whisky, known as "the water of life," is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from grains, water and yeast. Its deep history and variety of flavours make it a favourite among many. From its ancient roots to modern production, whisky offers a unique taste experience influenced by its origin and method of creation.

Origins and Evolution
Whisky’s story begins in the early Middle Ages in Ireland and Scotland. Monks started distilling grain into alcohol, creating the first versions of whisky. The term "whisky" itself comes from the Gaelic "uisge beatha," meaning "water of life."

Scotch Whisky
Scotch whisky, integral to Scottish heritage, must be made in Scotland and aged for at least three years in oak casks. Different regions like Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Islay, and Campbeltown are known for particular styles, for example Islay is known for being peaty and intense, but this isn't always the case. The earliest recorded mention of whisky in Scotland dates back to 1494. Single malt Scotch is made from malted barley in one distillery, while blended Scotch mixes single malts and grain whiskies.

Irish Whiskey
Irish whiskey, known for its smoothness, is usually triple-distilled and aged for at least three years. Distilling in Ireland dates back to the 12th century. Monks produced "uisce beatha", which evolved into "whiskey", with the earliset recorded mention thought to come from 1405. Brands like Jameson and Bushmills continue this tradition, crafting light, fruity whiskeys with hints of vanilla and honey.

American Whiskey
American whiskey includes diverse styles with a rich history. Bourbon, mostly made in Kentucky, must contain at least 51% corn and age in new charred oak barrels, giving it a sweet, full-bodied flavour. Tennessee whiskey, similar to bourbon, undergoes charcoal mellowing, adding smoothness. Rye whiskey, made from at least 51% rye, is spicier, reflecting early American distilling traditions.
