Sometimes, one may wait years for a new addition to Talisker’s core range, only for two to arrive in quick succession. Following the release of Talisker Storm in early 2013, we now welcome Talisker’s Port Ruighe, pronounced 'Port Ree'. This release, which does not bear an age statement, is finished in Port wine casks, imparting a new dimension to this Isle of Skye single malt. Initially, the nose offers a wave of sea spray, followed by more complex aromas of Crayola crayons, orange pith, and a hint of white chocolate. Brief notes of Demerara, sticking plaster, and plummy umeshu also emerge. On the palate, one encounters the characteristic Talisker brine, though considerably sweeter than usual. The texture is thick and mouth-coating, reminiscent of the Storm, with flavours of chilli and chocolate orange. It's also noticeably smokier than the nose suggests. The finish evolves from milk chocolate to cocoa and oak, with mocha notes and a faint hint of orange pith. Overall, while retaining the distillery's signature style akin to Talisker Storm with its thicker, oilier mouthfeel and wood smoke, Port Ruighe introduces additional characteristics from the Port casks, adding sweetness and notes of plum and chocolate.
